Home truths: US ponders radio service for China

Article Abstract:

Congress has been urged by the commission tasked with determining the feasibility of establishing a radio service for China and other totalitarian Asian states to pursue the project. If pushed through, the radio service will transmit uncensored information to listeners living in such countries. Bills proposing a Radio Free China or a Radio Free Asia are already moving through both chambers of Congress. Although there has been agreement on the benefits that such a radio service could provide to East Asians, legislators have been divided on whether to put up an entirely new operation or simply expand the Voice of America's Asia service.

New kid on the bloc

Hit by a backlash

Article Abstract:

Asian Americans are bearing the brunt of native-born Americans' increasing concern over the economic and social consequences of non-European immigrants. Most of these immigrants come from Asia and Latin America and are straining federal and state welfare budgets. In the process, Asian Americans are being discriminated against in schools and are becoming targets of racial violence. Similarly, they are being accused of fostering 'multi-culturalism,' or the voluntary segregation of different ethnic groups.
