Hong Kong leads in online fund trading: but selections are slim in novice market lacking face-to-face advice

Article Abstract:

A number of Hong Kong financial services firms are offering online investments services, as an additional distribution channel for its services. Charles Schwab Corp and Jardine Fleming Investment Mgt Ltd are the pioneers in the service, offering investors a 24-hour investment and investment information service on both companies diverse mutual fund options. Investors using the online investment service enroll in the service along with the amount the investor is willing to invest. Both firms keep the investment in a money-market account until a likely investment opportunity arises.

3Com to spend more in Asia

Article Abstract:

3Com Corp intends to increase its exposure in computer-networking equipment in the Asian region. The company, the maker of switches that route data from one computer to another, sees the continent as one of the fastest growing region for the industry because of its lack of Internet-ready infrastructure. 3Com, which intends to offer local area network telephony products that are able to carry voice, data and even video, plans to enter into joint ventures with established telecommunication firms in the region.

Curbing capacity is the quickest way to salvation

Article Abstract:

A deflation crisis looms over Asia and emerging markets as excess capacity remains uninhibited from regulatory control. This excess is particularly noted in Asia, where multinational companies and international banks have poured in major investments due to a belief in the region's strong market potential. Thus, overinvestment by manufacturing and financial services industries must be removed through tighter regulatory control.
