Hong Kong managers feel sting of new reality: layoffs

Article Abstract:

The wave of unemployment and salary cuts for white collar workers has hit Hong Kong. Sadly, this trend may continue due to the bleak economic situation in Asia. Companies such as Citibank Hongkong, Swire Pacific Ltd and Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Ltd have all downsized. However, according to Stanley Lee, a former business executive, self-employment can save white collar workers from the negative economic and social effects of unemployment. He believes that this alone could provide security to employees whose jobs may be in peril due to the economic crisis.

The idea behind this school of thought is that students who finish in such schools learn to speak English better and are afforded better opportunities in the real world. English speakers who are a distinct 6% of the total population of Indians are on the fast track towards success while those that are non-English speakers are missing out on life's best opportunities.
