Hong Kong retail sector offers an appealing theme

Many analysts consider Hong Kong's retail sector to be a good investment option despite its lackluster performance in the past few months. They state that negative publicity has helped push down the stock prices of Hong Kong retailers to bargain levels. Several fund managers have recognized this and they have started buying up shares in companies such as Theme International Holdings Ltd. and Esprit Asia Holdings.

Shares in Lane Crawford attract window shoppers

Article Abstract:

The trading of Lane Crawford International shares for less than their net asset value (NAV) has attracted prospective investors who believe that the company is ready for a friendly takeover or that majority owner Wheelock could take the company private. The shares had an NAV of HK$24.76 as of Mar. 31, 1995 while closing prices as of July 19, 1996 was 46% lower than this figure at HK$13.45.

Hong Kong luxury item retailer Joyce Boutique Holdings has experienced a drop in the price of its stocks in the wake of its earnings report. The company, which sells a wide range of designer labels, indicated in its report that financial performance remained stable although the future does not appear as bright as growth forecasts could only be safely pegged at single-digit levels.
