Hong Kong wins favor with managers as attitude about transition warms up

Article Abstract:

Investor interest in Hong Kong financial markets are growing due to public confidence concerning a problem-free reunification with China in 1997. Financial managers, who are confident that an increase in Japanese or US interest rates will not have a significant impact on Asian markets, stress that a successful transition will enhance the value of Hong Kong's financial markets. Managers also note that the prices of Malaysian and Singaporean stocks are not as attractive as those in other Asian markets.

Not all fund managers have deserted Sampoerna

Article Abstract:

Jakarta, Indonesia-based clove cigarette maker HM Sampoerna is still fighting to maintain its shares on the Jakarta stock exchange. Contrary to reports, Sampoerna's production remains strong. In 1995, it posted a 45% profit to 352.5 billion rupiah ($151.7 million). One reason behind the confidence of the company's followers is its virtual monopoly of the cigarette market. Its leading cigarette brand, 'Dji Sam Soe,' is the best-selling cigarette in the country.

Campaign against Bakun Dam focuses on bottom line

Article Abstract:

Environmental groups are using an innovative approach in environmental protests, wherein they present the financial or earning implications of environmentally-sensitive development projects to fund managers and investors which sometimes dissuade these investors from supplying the needed funding for the project. The London-based environmental group Friends of the Earth is using this ploy to oppose the Bakun Dam project in Malaysia.
