Hong Kong's King Midas?

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong retailer Dickson Poon has offered $240 million for Barney's Inc, which has been under bankruptcy protection since Jan 1996. The move is considered risky since Poon has no experience with a US department store chain, but Poon asserts that Barney's will serve as the North American outlet in his bid for global distribution of his luxury goods. Poon claims that he can control Barney's using his own strategy and philosophy, and has the capital and the management to help Barney's recover from bankruptcy.

Offer to rescue Barney's might not suit Dickson

Article Abstract:

Dickson Concepts International Ltd.'s plan to buy Barney's Inc. may have a short-term adverse effect on the former's profits and share prices. This would arise as a result of the additional cash that Dickson would have to borrow to save Barney's from bankruptcy and the time involved in restructuring the company. The prospects look brighter in the long term as the acquisition would fit with Dickson's line, which is high-end retailing through department stores.
