Hong Kong's Woo unveils platform that reflects changes in his career

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong chief executive candidate Peter Woo Kwongching's campaign platform is focused on economic, social and health care issues and reflects his experiences as a shipping executive. Woo, who would not state his views on the future of democracy in Hong Kong, plans to establish a political-affairs advisory council with representative from political and social organizations. Woo was an executive at Wheelock and Co. and Wharf (Holdings) Ltd.

A year on, pride is scarce in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

The expected patriotic pride that would characterize the first anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China in July 1998 was conspicuously absent since the city's economy is debilitated. Political concerns about China have been replaced by uncertainties about how competent the government is in leading the city through its economic woes. Some believe that a British leadership would have been more aggressive in its economic policy.

New Hong Kong will test Finance chief's tenacity

Article Abstract:

The imminent handover of Hong Kong to China will test Donald Tsang's tenacity following his appointment as the highest financial officer of Hong Kong. Tsang vows to continue his vocal attitude, saying he will speak out if he sees anything that may harm Hong Kong. According to Tsang, Hong Kong's economy will advance at a 5.5% rate in 1997 which is faster than in the previous several years.
