Hongkong Telecom will purchase cellular-phone assets

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd forged a deal with First Pacific Co to purchase some $625.4 mil-worth of the latter's cellular telephone assets. The purchase agreement would allow First Pacific to improve its finances and gives a clear indication that the current currency turmoil in the region is forcing companies in Hong Kong and elsewhere to seek refuge through business consolidation.

Singapore scraps auction

Article Abstract:

Singapore's telecommunications agency has cancelled an auction for third-generation mobile service licenses after only three companies bid for the four available spectrums. MobileOne Ltd., Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., and StarHub Mobile Ltd. will obtain the licenses at lower prices; however, analysts wonder whether 3G services will turn into a viable business.

Third-generation license bargains are a boon to Asia

Article Abstract:

The cost of entering the wireless data service market keeps declining as license fees keep declining as witnessed by Australia's recent license auction for third-generation wireless spectrum. Most Asian operators are only now beginning to grapple with the issue of licenses, so the decline in licensing costs is a boom, but one with some risks.
