Hongkong's life-blood

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the Biotechnology Research Institute of the Hongkong University of Science & Technology are developing alternative substances for human red blood cells. They are trying to unite dextran with hemoglobin, the protein which transmits oxygen in blood cells. The new substance will be ready for human testing in about two years, after which venture capitalists will be solicited to provide additional funding. The market for blood substitutes and other innovative pharmaceutical products is expected to be substantial in view of the rising susceptibility of donor blood sources.

Half an eye on dissent: authorities tolerate political activism within limits

Article Abstract:

Political dissenters are somewhat tolerated in Guangdong Province, China. For example, Li Zhengtian and Wang Xizhe were only jailed for five years for denouncing the government in 1974, although Wang was rearrested in 1981 and jailed until 1993. The student movement of 1989 was not suppressed with violence and only a few student leaders were arrested. In fact, Li contributed to the student movement in the province and was not arrested.
