Hose down: Mahathir douses campaigning for Umno elections

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad exhorted his party, the United Malays National Organisation, to keep its hierarchy as it is. Mahathir intended to head off a party dispute over who should be elected deputy prime minister and next in line to be prime minister, a position now held by Abdul Ghafar Baba. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim silenced speculation that he would pursue Ghafar's post by concurring on the need for a unified party. However, factionalism will continue to be a problem for Mahathir.
