Article Abstract:

President Daniel arap Moi's refusal to meet IMF requirements for economic reform has accelerated the financial crisis that has created a 70% to 100% inflation rate and $6.8 billion in foreign debt. Moi has taken some steps to control banks whose loan practices have worsened inflation.

Kenya's economy took a hit when the International Monetary Fund announced it was suspending a $220 million loan program because it is unhappy with the continuing political corruption there. The decision hurts Pres Daniel arap Moi, as this is an election year.
