How real is visual thinking?

Article Abstract:

The importance of developing a strong visual awareness of design through taught thinking methods is imperative for young architects who wish to create a lasting impression through their work. Designing and developing a finished building must take into account the visual impact in an intellectual manner, making full use of colours, materials and shapes, while keeping in touch with the emotional side of the design process. Students who can convert their visual thoughts into articulate statements are making full use of the skills needed for designing.

Getting other, not better

Article Abstract:

The architectural profession will find it difficult to maintain its standards. Architecture suffers from being neither a science or a humanity. The quality of new graduates will only be evaluated by looking at an individual's work as they complete their course. Architectural research is also problematic as its aims may not be acknowledged by other disciplines as being a separate form of research. The Oxford Conference in 1958 helped to cause the difficulties found in architectural education and research in the 1990s.
