How to run a referendum

Article Abstract:

Politicians worldwide are generally not in favour of referendums, as they remove decisions from the control of elected leaders. However, the UK Labour party has committed itself to hold referendums on at least four issues, including electoral reform and the single currency. This is partly because referendums appeal to ordinary people and partly because the declining authority of elected politicians makes it more necessary for them to seek legitimacy directly from voters. The Labour party does not seem to realize that defeat on any of the issues on which it has promised to hold a referendum would have a very negative impact on a Labour government.

The ghost at the feast

Article Abstract:

The ruling United Kingdom Labor party is selecting candidates for first minister of the new Welsh assembly. Cardiff member of parliament, Rhodri Morgan, was once part of a team with UK prime minister, Tony Blair, who does not favor Morgan as a candidate. This is surprising since in many ways, Morgan is a natural candidate for the post. The reason could be that heis seen as too independent, Morgan could still make a second and successful bid for leadership in Wales if he fails the first time.
