Hungry for power

Article Abstract:

The UK utilities industry is becoming increasingly competitive with several of the larger companies looking to acquire smaller operators whilst others are looking overseas for acquisitions. National Power has invested in power companies in Malaysia, Spain and the Czech Republic. PowerGen Chairman Ed Wallis has plans to make his company one of the largest worldwide operators. Some observers suggest two UK generation companies may be able to compete globally. Although some overseas operators are hoping to invest in the UK, such as the Electricite de France's interest in London Electricity.

There are new challenges to address when a small company starts to grow larger, according to PNC Tele.com Finance Director Paul Hinder. He has guided the company through five acquisitions and a joint venture, and these experiences have led him to believe that softer issues, such as personnel management, can frequently be the most challenging element of managing the merger and acquisition process. He emphasizes the importance of constantly being at the forefront of technological developments.
