Hanson has attempted to convince the public that it is going to be a conservative, core-run organization. Its two flamboyant founders have named successors. Hanson, however, has completed yet another hostile takeover. This year the target is Ranks Hovis McDougall PLC.

Fissiparous fortunes and family feuds

Many Asian businesses are family-run conglomerates, but some of these conglomerates in countries such as Hong Kong and Taiwan are splitting up their companies. This is a progression towards a more modern business outlook, but is also occurring from family disputes.

Can of worms: Compagnie de Suez

Article Abstract:

Compagnie de Suez must divest some of its less profitable businesses if it wants to please its shareholders. The giant conglomerate lost estimated $340 million in 1992. Gerard Worms, the head of Suez, has promised investors that there will be downsizing.
