Huon goes to sea following systems integration

Article Abstract:

Australian Defence Industries (ADI) will start the sea trials for the HMAS Huon, the lead ship of the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) new Huon-class coastal minehunters, following systems installation and integration. The sea trials are being conducted in the waters off Newcastle on Australia's east coast, as well as deployment to tropical littoral maritime environment off Queensland to assess the vessel's key capabilities, including the variable deep sonar (VDS). Equipment performance test for the HMAS Huon will also be performed in special test ranges. Electronic systems integration involve the interfacing of the Nautis-IIM (Aust) tactical data system (TDS), Type 2093 (Aust) VDS, air/surface surveillance systems, and combat and platform control and monitoring systems.

Chile's Scorpene design rolls from paper to steel

Article Abstract:

DCN Cherbourg has begun building two new Scorpene diesel-electric submarines for the Chilean Navy under a $400 million contract signed between the service and DCN International. Empresa Nacional Bazan of Spain is DCN's industrial partners in the program. The two 1,510-tonne surfaced displacement submarines are scheduled for delivery in 2004 and 2005. The Scorpene features a hydrodynamically efficient albacore hullform and is powered by four MTU diesels, a 360-cell battery bank and a Jeumont Schneider Industrie permanent magnet electric motor. UDS International SUBTICS integrated combat suite provides the platform for the submarine's weapons system.
