Hutchison unit draws fire

Article Abstract:

A Chinese phobia has engulfed US political circles and a manifestation of this is the wary treatment of Hong Kong following its return to China. Specifically, one instance of this wariness is a congressional hearing on Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd's subsidiary regarding its operation of two container ports at the Panama Canal. The firm operates one port at the Pacific entrance while the other is located in the Atlantic entrance of the canal. The hearing was called by Sen Trent Lott who warned of security risks posed by Hutchison.
