Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is running to become the head of the United Malays National Organisation (Umno), Malaysia's most powerful political party, denies that he has doled out government contracts in order to gain support. Anwar believes that corporate people should become active in Umno strategy, but not at the expense of the party's traditional constituents, the farmers and teachers. He would like to see Malaysia become more of an industrial power, and does not believe this requires a shift in the party.

Sweet victory: by-election win boosts Umno's young turks

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's National Front ruling coalition, dominated by the United Malays National Organisation (Umno), unexpectedly won a by-election in the Kampong Raja on Oct 13, 1993. The victory is particularly important to the faction of young Umno supporters, led by Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who hope to win control of the group. Conversely, the result was a crushing defeat for Semangat, the group that leads the anti-Umno alliance.
