IDG slates $1 billion investment for the Internet sector

Article Abstract:

International Data Group (IDG) of Boston, MA, is planning to invest $1 billion in venture capital on Chinese Internet firms prior to 2005. The move, which makes China the company's biggest investment target, commits two-thirds of the information technology publishing and management firm's worldwide venture-capital funding for the succeeding seven years. IDG's founder, Patrick J. McGovern, is confident that China will be the next hotbed for Internet firms.

Some fear privacy imperiled

Antiterrorist measures could compromise individual privacy rights and the free flow of information in some countries. America Online Inc., EarthLink and Yahoo Inc are cooperating with U.S. authorities investigating the terrorist attacks of September 11, and some governments in Asia may use the threat of terrorism as an excuse to extend controls over use of the Internet.
