INDIA'S HOTTEST IT CITIES: A BW-MODE SURVEY

Article Abstract:

The Business World and Taylor Nelson Sofres Mode conducted a survey of information technology (IT) cities by interviewing professionals in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune. According to the survey, Bangalore is the top city in India for information technology and Pune comes at the end. Pune, however, tops the list in overall quality of software development work and exposure to world class technologies and best practices. It is home to the Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing and the giant metre-wave radio telescope project, making it a centre for system programming as against application programming in other cities. Bangalore houses big information technology companies like Wipro, IBM Global Services and Infosys. Hyderabad scores over the other cities in overall quality of technological environment. The quality of facilities made available by the Government of Andhra Pradesh gives Hyderabad the potential to outgrow Bangalore. Bangalore has slowed down in its efforts to attract fresh investment even as Hyderabad and Pune are emerging as preferred destinations. Bangalore has the highest cost of living which may deter entrepreneurs. In India, information technology now contributes nearly 1 percent to the country's gross domestic product and employs around 200,000 persons. (tsm) (kvr)
