IPC stock price slumps on expected losses

Article Abstract:

The personal computer manufacturer, IPC Corp. of Singapore forecasted a maximum stock price loss of S$45.5 million due to the losses incurred by its Korean subsidiary, IPC Corp. (Korea) Ltd. The Korean subsidiary defaulted on the repayment of promissory notes worth 570 million won. IPC Corp. itemizes the losses as S$24 million in contingent liabilities to banks and S$15 million in accounts receivables. Despite the loss, IPC Corp. will still post profits. Sales of the company in 1995 amounted to S$1.54 billion.

In 1996 the market for personal digital assistants (PDAs) was estimated at 40 million pounds sterling, representing a 750% increase on 1991. Product prices vary from 10 to 1,000 pounds sterling. Palmtops make up 70% of total value sales; while electronic organisers account for 59% of total volume sales. An overview of market trends is given, including details of advertising, major industry players, prices, and forecasts for the future.

Arrest of head regulator will hurt Korean stock market, analysts say

The recent arrest of Securities Supervisory Board Pres. Paek Won Ku on charges of accepting bribes is expected to have a long-term impact on South Korea's stock market. Investigation into the finances of head of the regulatory board could lead to closer scrutiny of other board officials and South Korean companies connected to the graft charges as prosecutors crack down on corruption and illegal activities on the Seoul stock exchange.
