IT: a creative challenge Spinning out of ORBIT

Article Abstract:

The Office Research on Buildings and Information Technology (ORBIT) report identified the impact information technology was having on building design. Following the publication of ORBIT in 1983, many of its predictions were realised as new offices were built to accommodate cabling, larger work areas and powerful cooling systems. However, as computers have become smaller and companies seek to use expensive space more efficiently, ORBIT's predictions are less relevant. Future office design will be concerned with encouraging creativity rather than accommodating machines.

Glazed expression

Article Abstract:

The 6 million pounds sterling Cellular Operations call centre building in Swindon, England has been architecturally designed to maximize light, encourage greater productivity from workers and provide a positive environment for the call centre staff to work in. Architect Richard Hywel Evans designed the building, which is said to appear more zeppelin shaped than anything else. Landscaping has been carried out to compliment the new building, reflecting the holistic side of business.
