Image-boosting ads play up Singapore's new economy ideals

Article Abstract:

The Singapore government began running full-page advertisements in the United States business magazines in 2000 that convey the message that Singapore is very compatible with the United States. In the past, the country has considered itself a bastion of Asian values, which it derisively contrasted with Western values often associated with the United States. But now with the competition for global high-tech investment increasing, Singapore is promoting itself as creative and innovative, concepts not often associated with Singaporeans.

This has occurred as the city has set up unprecedented security for a business forum being held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.
