In a Taiwan crisis, would U.S. have a Japan card?

Article Abstract:

Foreign policy analysts noted that it is uncertain whether Japan will support US military actions to defuse tensions between China and Taiwan, despite the existence of a bilateral security treaty. Japan's constitution prohibits the government to engage in military activities other than self-defense. In addition, Japan's prevailing domestic crisis coupled with its extensive investments in China threaten to hamper its ability to respond militarily to tensions in the region.

Japanese open wallets before tax rise; looming increase may lift economy

Article Abstract:

The Japanese government's plans to increase the consumption tax is expected to send consumers to a spending spree, that, in turn, will boost economic growth. The tax increase is part of the government's strategy to restructure the nation's tax structure, which is heavily dependent on income tax revenue. However, the effects of this spending spree will only be short-term as the tax increase will result in the fall of consumer spending.
