Article Abstract:

E-Book Japan is a consortium of Japanese printers and book publishers and retailers that is developing electronic books using readers of a similar size to paperback. Distribution and publishing costs can be reduced through this venture, which has a subsidy from the Miniustryof International Trade and Industry, and font technology from Microsoft. Meanwhile, Fuji Xerox is offering books on demand for smaller runs of some 500 at a time. Japanese book publishers and sellers face a high level of returns and possible competition from foreign competitors.
