In praise of old technology

Article Abstract:

New technology may be adopted because it is fashionable rather than because it is needed, but old technology can be revived, as has occurred with clockwork. Modern steam engines may work more efficiently than diesel, and ballons and airships are also undergoing a revival. Paper has not become obsolete with the spread of computers, instead, more paper documents have been generated. Technologies that appear moribund have often been revived, and this should be borne in mind when technologies are declared obsolete.
