Article Abstract:

The creation of a single European currency poses particular challenges for Germany's Bundesbank, the most complex central bank in the world. Some reforms have been undertaken already, including the closure of more than 50 smaller branches, but the Bundesbank is now coming under growing pressure to undertake further reform. Indeed, senior Bundesbank officials have acknowledged privately that it may be necessary to totally review the bank's federalism. It will prove difficult to maintain morale while scaling down the Bundesbank.
