In space, smaller is beautiful

Article Abstract:

Mass production of small identical satellites does not only cut their unit cost, but also makes them less expensive to launch because of their low mass and compact size. Developments in small satellites are heading into two major courses. First, lightweight craft are already performing missions including Earth observation, which provides imagery of sufficient resolution to have military function. The second main avenue focuses on the potential ability for clusters of collaborating small satellites that fly in formation.
