Article Abstract:

The mutual distrust between India and Pakistan could reach further strains if a pro-nuclear opposition party in India wins election on May 21, 1996. Both countries have refrained from building nuclear weapons in the past, but that could change if the Bharatiya Janata Party wins election in India.

Article Abstract:

The Bharatiya Janata Party came to power in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh by promising to raze a mosque and replace it with a Hindu temple. Violence has broken out in some areas. A compromise would be to keep the mosque and build a temple in addition.

Flight of fancy: Kashmir

Article Abstract:

Muslims in Kashmir unhappy with their political status in India are resisting proposals by the Bharatiya Janata party that would encourage Hindu migration there. Six members of the political party were killed by Sikh gunmen in Punjab.
