Indians bring expertise home; growing wave of returning workers brings contacts, skills

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of Indians educated and trained overseas are returning to their homeland to contribute to its economic progress. Armed with professional talent, many of these nonresident Indians (NRIs) have been successful in major multinational businesses and are convincing their companies to invest in India. Multinationals prefer to tap NRIs from within the company to run their Indian operations, capitalizing on their knowledge of local dialects and cultures. Other Indian professionals abroad inquire from these country managers about employment opportunities.

Current-account woes shadow future growth

Article Abstract:

Southeast Asia's emerging economies continue to register strong growth but many economic experts have expressed concern over the long-term impact of current-account deficits. The problem is especially acute with regard to Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, all of whom suffered a sharp deterioration in current accounts in 1995. A Mexico-style crisis is not expected anytime soon but some economists warn that economic growth could be affected if the problem is not addressed soon.
