Indonesia: the army plays power politics

Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government is considering a controversial new law that gives its armed forces the unilateral authority to deploy troops in case of an emergency. The reasons for and implications of such a law are discussed, especially taking into account the efforts of reformers championing civilian supremacy, who want the military to take a backseat.

Article Abstract:

Akbar Tanjung, Indonesia's parliament speaker was sentenced to three years jail on charges of embezzling state funds. Four of the five judges relied heavily on the fact that Tanjung was acting on the instructions of then President B.J. Habibie at the time of embezzlement.
