Industrial linear optimization problems solved by constraint logic programming

Article Abstract:

The use of constraint logic programming (CLP) for solving constrained decision problems was investigated. Specifically, CLP was applied to solve two industrial linear optimization problems encountered by the steel company ARBED Luxembourg S.A. The first, which concerned a multicriteria selection tool for a coil rolling mill, was expressed as a mixed linear goal-programming problem and solved via a branch-and-bound rounding heuristic. The second, which concerned the disposition of steel girders, was formulated as a linear integer multicriteria location problem and solved through finite domain computations in the CHIP language.

Behavioral influences on weight judgments in multiattribute decision making

Article Abstract:

Behavioral aspects of weight derivation in multiattribute decision making systems are evaluated. It is shown that weight assignation validity in model- and decision-making should consider the methodology, the hierarchical structure and the reference point. This implies that easily assigned weight systems may be invalid. Another implication is that multiple assessment and other techniques must be used in weight assignation to remove systematic biases.
