Institutional investors may steer clear of Tokyo market if reforms are lacking

Article Abstract:

Many foreign and domestic stock investors intend to stop investing the Japanese stock market in the short term. The poor investor confidence in the Japanese market was stimulated by the recent Kobe earthquake and the decline of the US dollar to the Japanese yen. Many investors hope that the waning interest in the Japanese market will encourage major reforms in stock exchange regulations. They are hoping for the elimination of the dividend tax and an end to the ban on stock buybacks and holding companies.

Tokyo rally underpinned by recovery, local interest

Article Abstract:

The prospects of the Japanese stock market seem to be improving, particularly in light of the 4% increase in the Nikkei 225 during the first week of Jan. 1996. Observers attributed the positive outlook to signs that the Japanese economy may begin its movement out of stagnation. In addition, they noted that the growing interest among local life insurance companies with stocks as investments also contributed to the positive outlook.

Japan's plunging market hurts privatization plans

Article Abstract:

Japan's privatization plans are being hindered by the pervasive decline in the stock value of government-controlled companies. Plans to privatize state-owned railway companies, tobacco and salt monopolies have been stalled due to the constant plunge in the stock market. The government still awaits possible revenues amounting to $47.92 billion which will be generated by pending privatizations.
