Internet riders

Article Abstract:

The planned acquisition of Netscape Communications by America Online (AOL) also involves Sun Microsystems which will license the software of the group and sell servers to the merged company. This means that Netscape software, Sun's servers, and Netscape's Netcenter or AOL's site can be offered to customers. AOL and Sun are also developing Internet appliances and aim to set up a 'desktop portal' replacing the desktop from Windows. Sun's commitment to the alliance will be important, and there are real synergies between the three companies involved.

War of the worlds

Article Abstract:

Netscape Communications and America Online (AOL) plan to merge. Microsoft, meanwhile, faces an antitrust suit and argues that this merger means that the trial should no longer proceed. The merger does not, however, diminish the market power of Microsoft in a significant way and may underline the pressure on Netscape from Microsoft. Sun Microsystems will collaborate with AOL in the development of devices using Sun's Java language, and will ditribute Netscape software.
