Investec Guinness flight to expand in Asia; new unit of banking group hopes to benefit from economic slump

Article Abstract:

Investment company Investec Guinness Flight CEO Hendrik Du Toit expressed the firm's intention of expanding in Asia to take advantage of the region's economic slump. The announcement comes as a surprise given the fact that the company has just laid off three staff members in its desire to make the office as lean as possible until such time that the business picks up. Investec Guiness Flight is the asset-management unit of Investec Group, considered to be the second biggest banking group in South Africa.

Small funds face hurdles; risks raise alarm among Hong Kong officials

Article Abstract:

Funds management executives became worried when Hong Kong Monetary Authority Chief Joseph Yam and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad requested for international limitations to hedge funds. This is because many of the highest-rate fund companies are small fund firms that cannot be considered as powerful hedge-fund managers. Hedge funds include any fund that employs a number of buying, selling and leveraging activities to earn a profit even in a falling market.
