Investor's new concern in China is land

Article Abstract:

China's new rules on land development contained in the Notice for Further Strengthening Land Administration for the Protection of Arable Land may serve as a hindrance to foreign investments due to the stringent requirements in acquiring land for industrial development. China enacted the land reforms to protect its diminishing arable land and to halt the practice of local governments of profiting from industrial developments. The legislation puts industrial development decisions into the hands of the State Council.

Shell gets plant approval

Article Abstract:

Royal Dutch/Shell Group obtained approval from the Chinese government to develop a $4.5 bil petrochemical plant as the influx of foreign capital into China is starting to wane. The government's decision to approve the project comes as the rest of the Asian region suffers in an economic turmoil that has deterred numerous foreign investors. The project would enable Shell to utilize a part of its huge cash holdings, which reached 6.7 bil pounds sterling at the end of the third quarter of 1997.

Yangtze delta is fertile ground for investors

Article Abstract:

China's Yangtze River delta region is attracting more foreign investments because of its status as the country's biggest economic producer. Autonomous township and village enterprises are fueling much of the region's growth, with local governments providing incentives to export-oriented enterprises. More foreign investors are expected to come in as soon as local governments and the private sector solves the region's infrastructure problems.
