Iridium delays commercial phone links, expects full launch of service Nov. 1

Iridium LLC has set back the start of its commercial telephone service as well as messaging and paging services for its global communications systems from Sept. 23, 1998, to Nov. 1, 1998. Iridium's $5-billion global communications system making use of 66 low-orbiting satellites had been conceptualized in Motorola Inc. before Iridium was spun into a separate company. Motorala is the general contractor for the construction of Iridium's communications network. In the summer of 1998, Iridium launched an unprecedented $180-million global advertising and marketing campaign to herald its new services.

Iridium LLC is planning to spend $180 million for the global marketing of its mobile phone. Iridium's marketing efforts, which will include advertising, public relations and direct-mail campaigns, is targeted to make its product a worldwide brand by autumn 1998. The brick-size mobile phone, which has an breadstick-size antenna, initially costs as much as $3,000. The company hopes it will be able to convince consumers that its stout mobile phone is as cool and effective than most slim-sized mobile phones.

Qualcomm, Ericsson are close to pact to end long-running patent dispute

Article Abstract:

Qualcomm Inc. and Telefon AB LM Ericsson are near an agreement that would settle a lengthy dispute over a patent. Under the deal, both firms would be permitted to enter each other's main businesses. Ericsson would be able to make CDMA telephones. CDMA is a wireless technology that has been promoted by Qualcomm. Qualcomm would be given access to Ericsson's patents for GSM digital technology.
