Italy joins the Asian trade scramble

Article Abstract:

Opportunities for Italian trade with developing Asian countries are rising, with particular emphasis on the manufacturing and trading sectors for automobiles and fashion and design. Of the 12 Asia Pacific countries, Japan, Hong Kong and China were the leading trade partners, with 1991 statistical data showing growth in both imports and exports. This expansion has spurred a counterpart growth in cultural exchange, as manifest by the increased Asian awareness of and fondness for Italian cuisine.

Problem of balance: Clinton cabinet short on Asian expertise

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration has appointed experienced people on its foreign policy and economics teams, but lacks experts on Asia. Asian diplomats feel that Clinton's team is balanced, and will not make any undesirable moves. Clinton's choice of Los Angeles lawyer and chairman of his election campaign Mickey Kantor as US Trade Representative (USTR,) is considered a fair one. Asia, and particularly Japan, should, however, be prepared for a tough stand on trade from the US.
