Antonio Fazio, Chairman of the Bank of Italy for 12 years has kept the Italian banking industry strong by keeping out foreign investment. There is a new European Union economic policy of cross-border business practice. Italian regulators are contemplating whether to approve current foreign bids in the banking sector.

Italy's top banker steps down as probes intensify

Article Abstract:

Antonio Fazio of the Bank of Italy has resigned under great public pressure. The former Italian banking regulator's pro-nationalist banking policies prevented two foreign banks from merging with Italian lenders in direct contravention of the European Union economic policy of encouraging cross-border acquisitions.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's appointment of Mario Draghi as governor of the Bank of Italy is discussed in light of the scandal surrounding the bank's outgoing governor Antonio Fazio. Fazio's involvement in blocking the foreign takeover of two Italian banks is outlined.
