Consumer banks have been adding process-driven technology without much concern as to its effects on customers, but now many banks are taking step top get customers to use new technology, and tailoring technology for their needs. First Union Bank's pilot experiment in Asheville, NC, is described.

Firstdirect telephone banking service has become a hit with British consumers. Midland Bank PLC, its parent bank, is looking for ways to expand the service, and Midland's competitors are announcing telephone banking services of their own. The effect on local bank branches may be small.
