It's still Russia vs. Japan

Article Abstract:

World War II hostilities between Japan and Russia appeared to be far from over when efforts for a peace treaty were derailed further. Japanese Foreign Minister Michio Watanabe's failure to resolve the Kuril Islands dispute on his May 1992 visit to Moscow has become a major stumbling block in finalizing the peace accord. Japan's offer to delay repossession of the islands as long as Moscow recognizes Japanese sovereignty over these has not reversed stiff opposition in the Congress of People's Deputies in Moscow. The disputed islands were occupied by the Red Army during the last days of World War II.

Market forces

Article Abstract:

Russia will continue its economic relations with Vietnam in a bid to develop joint ventures with Vietnam and other countries in the region. Such a move will reinforce Russia's plan to be a market force in Southeast Asia. Bilateral relations will probably be retained as well, although changes can be expected on the security provisions of the 1978 Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. Economic and military matters, as well as the appointment of a new Vietnamese ambassador to Russia were discussed during the visit of Vietnam's Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Di Nien in Jan 1992.

Waiting for Moscow

Article Abstract:

Vladimir Kuznetsov's economic development plan for the Maritime Region is being delayed by the Russian government's bureaucratic inaction. The Greater Vladivostok project proposes to transform coastal areas into a special economic zone. However, Kuznetsov maintains that with Russia's crippling taxes, the project cannot possibly be implemented. Russian President Boris Yeltsin has yet to sign a special tax decree granting the region its own tax system.
