It's the king's land, OK?

Article Abstract:

The Domesday survey was carried out by William the Conqueror in England in 1086, and he probably wanted to know how much he could tax his kingdom. He may also have wanted information on military strength to repel invaders. Land was mostly owned by the non-English, with the king and officials accounting for over a quarter, the church by the same amount, and barons for some 40%. The survey helped to legitimate the possession of land by Norman barons, and strengthened their links with the king.
