Japan

Article Abstract:

The Japanese economy seems to be recovering and in 1996 should achieve growth higher than the rate of under 1% a year it has recorded since 1993. The economy was hit by the rapid rise in the yen in early 1995, but seems to have avoided recession thanks to a record public spending package, an easing of monetary policy and a fall in the yen. By early 1996, public capital spending should be boosted by the stimulus package, while the recovery in housing investment should be strengthened by low interest rates and greater affordability of housing.

Japan

Article Abstract:

The Japanese economy has become more volatile in 1997, especially consumer spending, due to a consumption tax increase. The economy looks set to contract in 2nd qtr 1997 and recover thereafter. Monetary policy is loose and the Bank of Japan is not likely to push up interest rates until Jun 1997 following a survey of business confidence. Rates are only likely to be raised if business confidence is stronger than expected in Jun 1997. The Japanese yen is likely to remain weak which should help exports which in turn should help recovery in 1998.

Japan

Article Abstract:

The Japanese economy has been affected by a drop in business confidence and industrial production, and the government announced a fiscal package to stimulate the economy in April 1998. Financial markets showed little response to this announcement. Fiscal reform is to be postponed to prevent tight fiscal policy from dampening the economy. The government also plans a tax review in 1998 and tax reductions could become permanent. Structural reform is needed to promote growth in the Japanese economy.
