Investors in Tokyo cope with the dollar's decline

Article Abstract:

Japanese investors are being forced to make a hard choice due to the devaluation of the dollar-yen exchange rate. Japanese investors must now choose between keeping their investments in risk-laden dollars or bring their investments home where the gains are lower. Investors saw the exchange rate of the dollar drop from 127 yen per dollar to 112.95 yen per dollar in May 16, 1997 to May 20, 1997.

ING to open new unit in place of Barings Futures

Article Abstract:

Internationale Nederlanden Groep N.V. (ING), the new owner of Barings PLC, announced plans to close down Barings Futures Singapore Pte. Ltd. and set up a new futures subsidiary in its place. ING officials have already met with the Stock Exchange of Singapore and the Monetary Authority of Singapore to discuss the resumption of operations for the Barings operation in the country.
