Jean Chretien's grand design

Article Abstract:

Canadian prime minister, Jean Chretien, plans to create a large boulevard in Ottowa, a project which involves the demolition of 'heritage buildings'. The idea of a boulevard has been suggested a number of times since 1916, and the cost could amount to 500 million Canadian dollars. The National Capital Commission has included the idea of a boulevard in its plan for Ottawa, published in Jun 1998. There have been a number of critics of the plan for a boulevard, on both aesthetic and practical grounds.

People want a place of their own

Article Abstract:

The bulk of housing in Sacramento, California, tends to be a single dwelling on a large amount of land, and this contributes to environmental problems such as traffic congestion. Apartments would use less land and place less pressure on the environment, but there is opposition to building apartment blocks from people in the neighborhood. There is a lack of affordable social housing, since developers often promise such homes but fail to deliver. More expensive homes also pay more in tax.

The best laid plans

Article Abstract:

A plan for a food superstore in Newcastle, England, has been rejected in a move that could embarrass agriculture minister, Nick Brown, who supported the scheme. Walkergate Works was seen as threatening an urban renewal scheme and was opposed by senior planning officials in Newcastle. A planning inspector from central government decided against the scheme in 1999, using similar arguments to those used in 1996, when the scheme was originally rejected.
