Jose Maria Aznar, Spain's dark horse

Article Abstract:

Spanish prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar, heads a government on the political right which has prepared Spain for European monetary union, and has reached agreements with politicians from the Basque and Catalan regions. Politicians from the ruling Popular Party see themselves as on the center-right, and Aznar sees United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, as a leader to emulate. The Socialists are disorganized and affected by corruption allegations. Aznar appears less corruptible than his predecessors. Spain is still emotionally more to the left than is Aznar, which may account for his move toward the center.

The Aznar touch

Article Abstract:

Spanish prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar, has succeeded in strengthening the Spanish economy so that Spain can join European monetary union. Inflation and interest rates have dropped, and there has been progress on tax and welfare reforms. Further progress is needed since unemployment is high and labor laws are too restrictive. There has been an improvement in the problem of terrorism in the Basque Country. Spain appears to have become one of the stronger southern European nations.

Jose Maria Aznar

Article Abstract:

Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar has achieved much since taking office in 1996, but he has failed to handle the Basque problem effectively. Aznar refuses to consider any Basque nationalist aims, which means he alienates moderate Basques and makes it harder to curb Basque terrorists.
