Jusco's retailing vision

Article Abstract:

Retail industry observers are cautious in their comments about the plan of Japanese retail company Jusco Co.'s to change Japan's retail environment by establishing shopping malls. Some observers admit that Jusco's plan may have merit, since the company has a record of attracting American and European specialty stores. Jusco plans to establish shopping malls in suburban areas, which have been hit by the departure of manufacturing firms in favor of cheap labor and costs in foreign lands. Jusco's other advantages lie in recent moves by the legislature to reform Japan's retail laws to allow large scale retailing.

Retailer Mitsukoshi seems ready to end its losing streak: Japanese retail firm's bid to boost efficiency has investors cheering but leaves some analysts skeptical

Article Abstract:

Investors responded positively to the planned operational restructuring of Japanese retailer Mitsukoshi which sent its stocks' price up. But a number of analysts believe that Mitsukoshi's management is very much in the dark about how to go about the planned restructuring, as evidenced by their reluctance to overhaul non-performing stores in the previous years. Analysts believe that the announcement is a temporary ploy that could help the company wait out the Japanese economic crisis, banking on the renewed consumption once recovery is complete.

It's time to shop retailers

Article Abstract:

The decision of Japan's Ministry of Trade and Industry to deregulate the retail industry has invigorated stock trading in the retail sector. The deregulation covers the removal of restrictions for shop operating hours and the amount of floor space, which is expected to promote the rise of mall developments. Stocks of mall developers such as Jusco and Mycal are expected to do well in the stock market. Japan's retail industry is dominated by mom-and-pop stores, which account for 60% of the Japanese retailing revenue.
