Kazakhs return to the steppes

Article Abstract:

Ethnic Kazakhs are returning to Kazakhstan, where they receive help from the government, but financial constraints have limited this aid and the number of families allowed to return. Ethnic Kazaks account for 52% of the population, up from 39% in 1991, while some 40,000 families have returned from 1991 to 1998. Some Kazakhs return from Mongolia and China where they may have been farmers, and some speak only Kazakh. Others have come from Turkey and may have gained experience of business. Kazakhs were nomads, and many were simply elsewhere when borders were drawn and a settlement policy of nomads was introduced.

Alien scientists take over USA!

Article Abstract:

Foreign scientists and engineers play a key role in US science. Freigners are especially well represented among top scientists, those in top clubs or who have produced most-cited papers, and in th physical sciences. Heads of biotechnology companies have also come from abroad. The UK and Germany have contributed many scientists, but Asian scientists are also immigrating in increasing numbers. The proportion of gross domestic product spent onscience is higher in the US than in the UK or Germany, and much of this comes from private sector spending since public sector spending is declining.

Turn of the tide? Immigration

Article Abstract:

The consensus that immigrants provide a source of hard-working, cheap labor is starting to wane in the US. This sentiment is particularly true in California, the state with the largest immigrant population. A report from the think tank RAND argues that immigrants are becoming an economic burden.
