Kennedy's curse

Article Abstract:

The new leader of the British Liberal Democrats, Charles Kennedy, is less enthusiastic about links with the Labor Party than was his predecessor, Paddy Ashdown. He is concerned about the environment, social justice, and freedom of information, and aims to follow his own policies in these areas, and it is not clear that the government will move toward proportional representation, which is an aim of the Liberal Democrats. The party has performed well in elections, but there are ambiguities about its policies.

Kennedy Democrats

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Liberal Democrats have held their annual conference with a new party leader, Charles Kennedy. He has a major task of dealing with the issue of how the Liberal Democrats should relate to the ruling Labor Party, and has decided on continued 'constructive opposition', following the policy of the previous leader, Paddy Ashdown. Some goals have already been achieved through this policy, such as constitutional reform, and in the longer term, there is hope for electoral reform and other goals.

Paddy's party

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom Liberal Democrat party will hold a conference in Sep 1998, and relations with the ruling Labor party are likely to be discussed. Some Liberal Democrats are concerned about an informal alliance with the Labor party, and have fears for the future of the Liberal Democrats as a distinctive force in UK politics if coalition government and proportional voting are introduced. There are divisions within the UK cabinet on this issue.
