Kickback setback

Article Abstract:

Members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) will sign a treaty on corruption on Dec 17 1997. The treaty, which will enter the national legislation of the 29 OECD member countries, will make it a criminal offence for companies to bribe foreign officials. The OECD hopes to persuade other countries to sign the treaty. Asian governments have traditionally opposed any international attempts to control corruption, but supporters of the anti-corruption movement are hoping that the economic problems in Asia will persuade Asian countries to sign up.

Playing by new rules

Article Abstract:

The International Football Federation (Fifa) is seeking to prevent child labor being used to make footballs. This follows a campaign by labor groups concerned over use of child labor to produce footballs in Pakistan. The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) attracted publicity with its campaign and developed a code of conduct with Fifa covering labor standards. Other organizations may have to develop similar codes of conduct due to opposition to usage of child labor from consumers in developed economies.

Future shock: new proposals are trick proposition for WTO

Article Abstract:

Organizers setting the agenda for the World Trade Organization's first ministerial meeting must sort through a rash of proposals with varying degrees of support. Choosing the wrong ones would lead to stalemate or bad feelings at a crucial time for building momentum. One request from the European Union, calling for discussions on worldwide regulations levelling the economic playing field, will probably receive the green light. Others, notably a formal link between trade and labor rights, are less feasible.
